A leading doctor had quoted on a TV show that skin sensitizers are nothing but chemicals, and people must use them with care as they could cause allergic skin reactions. Dr. Chris Steele, mentions on ITV’s ‘This Morning’, “This is something a lot of people are unaware of. Reactions due to these skin sensitizers take their own different time to affect people. For some people, this affect can be seen as early as some days of application of the sensitizers.” Scary thought indeed, and gets even more scary when Dr. Steele adds, “The fact that none of these chemicals have any significant value to be added to the cream is even more worrying. At best, these chemicals present in the creams add to the preservative value of the creams. It just ensures that the creams remain stable. That’s it.”
We screened a lot of creams that had these skin sensitizers. Commonly, we found the use of parabens, which we found are used as different compounds in these creams. Some common parabens used in these creams noted by us were methylparaben (E number E218), ethylparaben (E214), propylparaben (E216) and butylparaben. On further research, we found that isobutylparaben, isopropylparaben, benzylparaben and their sodium salts, were less commonly found and used parabens. Parabens can also be found naturally. Methyl paraben, for example, is one of the parabens that can be found in natural plants.
Armed with the thought that we ought to find products that do not contain any of these harmful ingredients which could only jeopardize the user’s health, we tried and tested a lot of products.
